1. Problem Solving

Problem Solving is one of the core aspects of design. Problem solving is very crucial skill that any design job requires and that recruiters look for. So, how does one learn problem solving? Tbh, I’m not good at it myself, I’m also trying to figure out how does one learn problem solving but what I know is basically by understanding what is a problem first.

Creating a website which sells tshirts is not a problem, that’s a solution actually. A problem would be something like “In a busy and hectic schedule, a working professional is not able to find out time to go to market and wander and shop for clothes that he wants”. Maybe a solution could be creating a website, creating an app etc.

So start thinking about what solutions you see around yourself, all of those would have been problem once, someone would have thought of the solution then they would have made something that we see around us as one of the solutions.

So here’s what I want you to do. Look around yourself, find 10 random objects around you and list all of them down in a notebook. Take the first one for ex: A bag. Think like this bag is the solution but to what problem? Write like this

  1. Solution : A school/Work Bag (Specify the solution in as much detail as you can, what kind of bag is it? Is it school bag, is it work bag, is it travel bag, is it hand bag etc)
  2. Problem : What problem does the school/work bag solve? Write it down, write down whatever is coming to your mind, it doesn’t have to be polished. “Children have to take books and stationaries to the school.”
  3. Who ?: Who faces the problem? Think about who is the one facing the problem. Get into their shoes, empathize with them and try to understand and actually imagine their sitiuation. School bag one children can be facing, workbag one working proffesionals adults can be facing, travel bag one, anyone who is travelling can be facing
  4. What? : What all possible solutions can be? Now that you know the problem and who are facing them, try to think of as many solutions as you possibly can that might solve the same problem. Like, school children can carry their books etc in a plastic carry bag, they can carry it in their hands etc. Think of all the possible solutions the problem can have and write all of them down
  5. Why? : Why was one solution chosen over the other? Think of why of all the possible solutions only 1 was picked up? Why was a plastic carry bag not a optimal solution? Think about the reasons and write it down. Do it for all the 10 objects.
